  • If Riceville won they are in because Janesville upset NE Hamilton.
  • Riceville Won! 47-40
  • Wow, should be another area team in.
  • Sounds like Hanke rushed for over 300 yards for Osage tonight.
  • Yes! Riceville is in the first round!
  • They can thank Janesville for that.
  • does anyone have the score of the south harden ft. dodge game?
  • Eagle Grove at A-P, Dike-NH at Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Nashua-Plainfield at Woodward-Granger, Hudson at St. Ansgar
  • Just a guess. But Janesville beating NE Hamilton likely landed them in as them and Tripoli will be 3-3 in the district and Riceville beat Tripoli.
  • also does anyone have the score to the north fayette game?
  • does anyone have the score to the hudson bcluw game?
  • Do you know who won between (8-0) Armstrong-Ringsted and (8-0) West Bend-Mallard?

MARSHALLTOWN -- Justin Penner and the rest of his Mohawks had tears in their eyes.
This was the end. Not the end they wanted, but the end nonetheless.
Marshalltown had just put the finishing touches on a 42-7 win over Mason City when Penner lined up his 22 seniors on the goal line and each player and coach went through the line individually.
“Nobody from the outside will understand,” Penner said. “Nobody.”
The loss Friday closed the books on the 2011 Mohawks at 2-7. Marshalltown quarterback Blake Gimbel was a big reason why.
At one point the scoreboard read Gimbel 5, Mason City 4.
As in Gimbel, the Marshalltown quarterback, had five touchdowns, Mason City had four first downs. That was just the first half.
Gimbel came into the night as Class 4As leading passer by more than 1,200 yards. His performance Friday didn’t hurt. It simply reasserted the junior as one of the state’s elite.
By the time the first 24 minutes ended, Gimbel was 19 or 27 for 253 yards and three touchdowns. He had two other rushing touchdowns.
Marshalltown had 302 yards in the first half and 17 first downs. Mason City couldn’t get on track, mustering only four first downs and 65 total yards and turned the ball over twice in the opening 24 minutes.
Gimbel finished the night 23 of 34 for 332 yards and six total touchdowns.
“He’s had seven picks in about 350 throws,” Marshalltown coach Dave Holdiman said. “We can live with that.”
Mason City had a chance to qualify for the playoffs when the night started. After Gimbel added his third touchdown in the first quarter, that scenario was out of play as the Bobcats led 21-0 after one.
Mason City simply didn’t have the firepower to compete with the Bobcats, especially considering the Mohawks turned it over four times as the running clock was in effect the entire second half.
“They have found their niche,” Penner said of the Bobcats. “We all want to be unique. We want to fit in and have an offense like theirs in a sense that it’s a lot to prepare for. They’ve certainly found their niche.”
They perfected it on this night.
Whether it was bubble screens ripping off chunks of yards or Gimbel making plays out of the pocket, the Bobcats were a handful.
“What he did well was adlibbing after things deteriorated,” Penner said. “It wasn’t always his first, second of third read. He hurt us when he was outside the pocket. He did a really nice job.”
It wasn’t until Blake Spotts scampered in from five yards out with 28 seconds remaining that the Mohawks were on the board.
If there was one guy Penner could have score late in the game, it probably would have been Spotts, the senior quarterback who began the year as the starter.
“As a coach, you go home and feel like crap every night because you try to separate your feelings for a kid and be a coach,” Penner said. “He means a lot to our program and what we want to do going forward.”
As do the other 21 seniors.
“I remember after the Fort Dodge game we had kids hanging around until 11 o’clock,” Penner said. “We had kids that are man enough to say ‘I love you.’ They showed gratitude to me for being their coach. I’m in debt to all of them.”

  • I can't believe this. Mason City got the exact help it needed to get in, but Mason City lost.
  • With LeMars Gehlen losing, looks like West Hancock could possibly play all their playoff games at home.
  • Good luck to all the football teams in North Iowa, in the state playoffs!!!
