DES MOINES | This wasn’t the state finals but it sure felt like it.
Every move was high pressure. Every counter of the utmost important.
The win: One of the greats in Kaz Onoo’s Mason City High career.
In a highly anticipated 1 versus 2 matchup that came down to two 30-second ride outs, Onoo scored the winning reversal to emerge with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Iowa City West’s second-ranked Chris Walters on Friday morning.
“I wanted to open up a little bit more, but he’s a really strong wrestler,” said Onoo, who will face Linn-Mar’s Damon Griffin later today for a spot in the Class 3A championship match.
Just minutes after Onoo reversed his way to the semis, Andy Bartel followed suit at 160 pounds on the same mat with a convincing 9-1 win over Glenwood’s Josh Clark.
Bartel, who is ranked fourth, will wrestle Cedar Rapids Prairie’s third-ranked Skyler St. John in the semifinals.
When Dusty Rhodes forecasted Onoo’s quarterfinal bout with Walters on Thursday he said it felt like a 3-2 match.
He didn’t see it playing out like this, though.
With the first period winding down, Walters had the first scoring opportunity, lifting Onoo into the air only to have the Mason City senior somehow fight out of it to keep the match scoreless.
“I work with a lot of coaches. They are some of the toughest guys around,” Onoo said. “They are beating me up. If I have to fight off their takedown I can fight off just about anybody in the high school tournament.”
Mason City coach Dusty Rhodes said there’s one reason why the first period ended scoreless.
“He’s a fighter. He’s a fighter,” the coach said. “We need to show that to every kid in the wrestling room.”
Onoo and Walters traded escapes in the second and third period before Walters had another scoring opportunity in overtime.
But again, Onoo was able to fight it off setting up the 30 second rideouts.
“That was probably one of (Iowa City West’s) biggest mistakes by trying to keep Kaz down,” Rhodes said.
Onoo’s reversal came midway through the 30 second ride out and he kept Walters down to secure the 3-2 victory.
“I wasn’t really looking for a reversal,” Onoo said. “It’s something that opened itself up. That’s why you have to keep wrestling.”
Bartel’s win wasn’t nearly as dramatic but it was just as effective.
He built a 6-1 lead after a period thanks to two takedowns and two back points. He pushed the lead to 9-1 after the second period. Bartel and Onoo are each locked into top-six finishes.
“Better than last year but sixth place isn’t what I want to be,” Bartel said. “I want to be first. That’s my goal here. I won’t feel accomplished until I get that.”
